Love Snack

We have been used to putting cookies, biscuits or chips in our kids’ lunchboxes. Though delicious and easy to pack, these food do not have enough nutrients to keep our kids fit. It’s high time to move to a more nutritious snack without sacrificing taste.

Sandwiches are nutritious and can be a complete meal if packed with the right combination of filling. Also, it is fun to prepare, especially when we do it with our kids.

Choosing the bread would be the first step. Figure out what kids prefer. There are wide varieties of breads from white, wheat to rye. We can even use less common breads for sandwiches like rolls and pita, and we can toast the breads too.

Next, choose a spread that would keep the bread together. The most common of these would be mayonnaise, but try experimenting on jams, margarine and even avocado.

To make a complete meal out of our sandwiches, let’s add ham, bacon or tuna. Then, put in some vegetables like lettuce, tomatoe, and pickles. There are more fillings to choose from; you can put in fresh or canned goods. Just make sure you put in those that kids would like eating.

Since kids have small hands, slicing up the sandwich would be a good idea. It will be easier for kids to handle and less messy.

Now, to complete the meal, put some juice, milk or soup in their lunchboxes.

If sandwiches will be served as snacks at home, then we may want to explore our creativity even more. Try different styles of slices like squares, triangles or whatever comes to mind. Use decorated toothpicks to keep the sandwich together. To make it look more interesting, garnish the plates with tomatoes formed like flowers or baskets.

While sandwiches are fun to make and delicious, it’s always love that puts in the final flavor. So, bring the kids now to the grocery and have them pick their sandwich fillings and start making a love-filled sandwich.
